Ötztal - The Eldorado for all rock sports enthusiasts

Closer to heaven step by step - climbing in Ötztal

In no other valley in Tyrol are fantastic climbing areas and via ferratas so close together as in Ötztal. The valley is one of the granite climbing areas in Tyrol and, with almost 750 routes in 19 different climbing gardens, offers a wide range of routes at all levels of difficulty. Climbing history was written here by Reinhard Schiestl, who opened the first nine routes in Tyrol in the early 1980s.

Whether families with children or hard movers, everyone gets their money's worth climbing in Ötztal. To list all the highlights of climbing gardens, via ferratas and outdoor activities here would go beyond the scope of this article. The best thing to do is to come climbing in Ötztal and simply print out the topo of your favorite climbing garden at home.

The Ötztal

The 67 km long Ötztal valley in the middle of the Ötztal Alps with its 8 villages of Haiming, Sautens, Oetz, Umhausen, Längenfeld, Sölden, Vent and Gurgl stretches from the upper Inntal valley towards the south. Gurgl - with its location at an altitude of 1,930 m - is the highest inhabited church village in Austria.

5 tips in Ötztal

  • Aqua Dome - Tirol Therme Längenfeld: The little ones romp and swim in the various children's areas, while the adults relax in the thermal bath. Experience the perfect vacation moment!
  • There are certified, family-friendly climbing gardens in the Ötztal: Oberried in the municipality of Längenfeld is an idyllic spot with excellent safety, picnic areas and a toilet. A visit with the whole family is always worthwhile.
  • The Engelswand in Tumpen is perfect for sport climbing for all ability levels. There is an easy approach and even several multi-pitch tours in the climbing garden.
